Summer work overview: Tutorial

After the tutorial from the discussion and analysis of Summer projects, I discovered help with what I need to work on to become unstuck with my practice work.

I found this tutorial extremely helpful as everyone in my group had something different to say collectively about my sketchbook which would be extremely helpful in the near future.  

I was considerably struggling to find artists that influenced my work, however it was pointed out to me that the artists don't necessarily have to work in the exact same way but just have a similar concept. I had previously looked at Lucienne Day, Jennifer Collier and Fiona Wilson, I enjoyed their techniques and their target audiences were quite similar to what I'm aiming for.  

I was successful with black and white prints, further developing them into calico prints using my Epson printer. The artist that was suggested to was Carolyn Saxby and Teresa Horrocks as their prints have a similar effects to mine.

It also became known to me that my main strength is my use of media to create different strengths of drawings, and to take unusual parts of objects and create successful repeat patterns from this. 

I pointed out that throughout everyone of my prints all I wanted to do is embroider over the top with the sewing machine to distort the prints, it was suggested to me to use a metallic colour pallet (gold, silver, copper). I have already used Pinterest to gain inspiration for this but haven't found a specific artist, so I will research work from previous degree shows to look for the effects of this and gain more inspiration.

After I had created a decent body of work I decided to research into practitioners that I felt could influence my work more and inspire me to further the development of my future and the intended audience of my work. I found that everything I had drawn, I wanted to make patterns out of by printing. Then the prints that I made I felt needed textures and movement, therefore I had the urge to machine embroider all over them. 
 

                                               

Which led me to the artist Lucienne Day as she creates patterns with detailled prints... although she adds colour underneath her drawings,  her target audience could be similar to that of mine. I enjoy the pastel colours within her work as it allows the drawings to become the main focus.

My samples and product designs always seem to be influenced by Jennifer Collier, I enjoy how she uses recycled materials to reform and translate into other materials - equally how she changes a material from its original state. I use this in my own practice work by using embroidery techniques to change materials from their original state, (e.g. using pintucks, couching, pleating etc.) to alter the shape and fall of a material. I also find designing and making materials to translate into childrens clothing (particularly dresses) really  fullfilling and effective.

Over the summer I have been increasingly interested in creating patterns through print, with the aid of a photocopier to manipulate and change original drawings.

                                         

My sketchbook is based on various places that I have been over summer including; the beach, garden centres, work, Alton Towers, Ibiza etc. These all included prints and drawings that I could envisage being manipulated and processed with the use of embroidery to completely change the outlook of the materials, this all combines itself with the intrest that I have with commercial textiles, particularly fashion based.

                                  

My work was mainly influenced by Fiona Wilson, a textile artist that uses unusual tools to create marks and textures; these marks are then translated into her practice work using stitch, this creates a completely different surface. 

Wilson also combines these textural stitched surfaces with colour, attatching thogether other materials often using an embellisher machine. This conclusively makes a completely different material, that subsequently connotes Quiltmaking techniques previously learnt in other units, such as; crazy patchwork and Kantha stitched.

 In my mind I would apply this to my own practice work by stitching over prints and drawings I have created through initial research and use to apply into commercial products. 
• My commercial research included mostly Childrens clothing designs, this is a strong area for me as I enjoy creating clothing with my own materials as they can all be displayed effectively and efficiently in one place.
