Friday Drawing: Mechanical Drawing

This weeks Friday Drawing entailed using various mark making tools to draw with. The aim was to develop an awareness of  mark making and process led drawing systems through construction and relief composition. To explore how 'Data' can be interpretated through consideration of creative procedures. Therefore the first section of the drawing day was to construct a tool to draw with, for me I used various tools - the end of a glue stick, a toy car...
These created marks that were purposefully linked to my visual research.
The main artist that inspired me from this was 'Zimoun', he uses materials to create sound and movement instillations. One of his pieces is a motor, with a metal rod instered - when all the motors are swtiched on the metal rods all move in different directions, creating sound in the process. It occured to me that this process would be effective with a drawing tool attatched to the motor, e.g. a pencil/paintbrush.

Zimoun Instillation

This inspired me to buy a toy car and let the wheels paint the paper when pulled back. I also used a glue stick lid to create the circular shapes and ridges that linked clearly to my visual research within my Textile World.

The layering process of tracing paper in these drawings, was there to replicate the work I have been producing within Embroidery. The layers knock back drawing to create a pattern with depth - similar to the layering of materials to create textures when sewing into them.

Friday Drawing: Diesect and Interlink

24/01/2014

The brief for this weeks Friday Drawing was to develop an awareness of material, process and perspective through both constricting and expanding 2D and 3D drawings.
The task set was to create a miquette, which was reflective of the 'Data' project and processes explored in the current textile world.

Part 1 - Construct
To create a small 5x5cm miquette.
This was taken from work performed in the current Embroidery world, I decided to sew a spiral using the mateials within this weeks equipment list.

Spiral miquette - Using a plastic lid to conserve the 'Data'.

Part 2 - Interlink and Extend
This entailed observing the physical attributes, and extending them in your own way.
For this I simply created more of the same miquette, and gathered them together within a wall space - this was the corner of the room.

Part 3 - Observe and Develop
Using an A1 sheet of cartridge paper, we were asked to measure 5cm intervals along the length of the page, scoreing and creaseing to create a concertina book.
Then using mark making and linear techniques I used a 2H pencil to draw from the instillation. I mainly focused on the shape of the yarn and the textures it created.

As recently I have been struggling within the Embroidery project with basically how to develop my samples - the Friday drawing day has definately helped to expand my sapmling ideas. As even though I attached the yarn in a spiral shape using a running stitch, it created the effect of a flower, with how the yarn was layered. And as flowers collect and store 'Data' I believe this to be an inspirational turning point within my project, further exploring the patterns and textures within flowers and plants, whilst also researching the 'Fibonacci Sequence'.
