'Spiral' Drawing.
During the "Drawing Weeks" I worked with various different media to create different textures,
line and tones.
I started with Nigel on the Tuesday drawing day, and used rules to create drawings that relate to 'Data'. The rules were:
- To use continuous line.
- A sharp pencil.
- To make each line 2mm apart.
- Drawing should last 25 minutes.
The first step to creating the drawings were to map out a 25cmx25cm in the middle of A2 heavy cartridge paper, and completely fill with a black oil bar then layer another sheet of the same paper over. Find the middle of the page and begin to draw a 'spiral' using the above rules. I enjoyed the experience of this way of drawing because it allows a limit.
Even though everyone used the same rules each outcome was individual to that person, and each produced a different amount of 'data' about the person that created it. This inspired me to ask a variety of people to produce the spiral drawings (using the same rules), to see how they would differ in size and density.
My mum created the prints below, this collected data about her style of drawing, and reflected contour lines, rather than my interpretation which connoted age lines in a tree.
These drawings could be interpretated into my embroidery work to come bu careful choice of materials - the oil bar has created a thick soft aoura that a velvet, pile fabric could create.
