Pin Tucking is a technique that can be created on different scales, there are three different machine feet, each with a different number of grooves underneath. The seven groove foot is only effective on lightwieght materials, such as chiffon, silk, organza... The five groove foot is mainly used on linen and cotton, and the three groove foot is often used on felt, velvet, cord.
To create a larger tuck, tighten the top tension - however on lightweight mateials this tends to gather and stretch. I also found that when sewing on a lightweight material across the bias it stretches the fabric and creates unexpected shapes.

This sample is my favourtie pin tuck, as it effortlessly relates to my visual research. The material used encompassed a striped pattern, the pintucks created a texture on the front and the spool thread layed down an interesting pattern on the back of the material, so ideally you could use either side of the fabric. This also slightly links to my artist research with how I wanted to use the same colour thread as fabric, only in this instance I have used black with black to create a new surface.
Although it is only possible to use a patterned stitch on the foot for lightweight materials, I found that even though there was a restriction of straight stitch with the other feet - this helped me to perform better and push my samples to create even more texture.
